The Main Street Approach

Program Objectives

Main Street Middlesex is an exciting new program for downtown revitalization taking place right now in Middlesex County, Ontario. The program is based on the Main Street Approach, which was developed by the National Trust for Historic Preservation in Washington, DC.

Program objectives include:

• Revitalization of historic downtown core areas

• Community capacity building

• Business development and job creation

Why are we using the Main Street Approach?

  • It is a proven, successful program

(with a focus on comprehensive downtown revitalization)

  • It builds on partnerships across the County

(strengthening relations between stakeholders/groups to ensure results)

  • It empowers volunteers

(provides training and recognition, encourages self-sufficiency)

Where we started

  • County-wide economic development strategic planning

  • Committed municipalities visioning for their downtowns

  • Main Street certification and resources

  • Funding approval from all 3 levels of Government (County, Provincial and Federal)

Where we stand

  • Several participating municipalities

  • Designated downtowns each with a local volunteer committee that meets to discuss downtown revitalization

  • Funding from FedDev Ontario
